Large Scales for Weed
There was a time when using large kitchen scales was commonplace among growers. These scales run upwards of 300 dollars and can weigh heavy loads of weed accurately. Take this one here:
CAS EC-30 EC Series High Accuracy Counting Scale
It has a heavy 30 kilogram (30,000 gram) maximum capacity but only a 0.002lb (~1 gram) readability. That means the display number value will move at whole grams at its smallest increments.
Now that doesn’t mean this model is not accurate; don’t confuse readability with accuracy. It comes certified, calibrated, and accurate. The trick is to add or remove buds until you tick the gram number value up or down. If you want to weigh out an eighth with this, good luck. The best you can do is weigh a quarter and cut it in half, or add calibration weights to the mix.
Large scales are best suited for large quantities of weed. If you’re filling big bags of buds all day, this scale may be a good option for you. We’ve used these kinds of scales for years, and they work great for weighing pounds and kilos.

How to calibrate a weed scale?
Calibration & Adjustment
Calibration and adjustment are two separate terms often grouped as one.
- Calibration is the process of weighing a known object and comparing the results with the object’s true weight value.
- Adjustment, or calibration adjustment, is the process of adjusting a scale to the true weight value of a known object. This is what “calibrating your scale” is.
Cheap digital scales often need adjustment straight from the factory. This can be done via the scale’s calibration mode (Cal). Use calibration weights or a solid, non-porous, and non-static retaining object.
So what’s the best way to calibrate a scale for weed?
Calibration Weights
A calibration weight is an exact known weight that can be used as a reference when adjusting a scale.
The American Weigh Scales Calibration Weight Kit (Amazon link) contains a range of gram and milligram weights:
- Gram Weights: (1) 1 gram, (1) 2 gram, (1) 5 gram, (1) 10 gram, (2) 20 gram, (1) 50 gram
- Milligram Weights: (1) 10 mg, (2) 20 mg, (1) 50 mg, (1) 100 mg, (1) 200 mg, (1) 500 mg
Put a nickel on the scale
A US nickel made during or after the year 1866 is made to a weight of 5.000 grams. Many stoners already know that you can use a nickel as a 5-gram calibration weight.
Now, this doesn’t take into factor the wear-and-tear degradation of a circulated coin, so if you’re going to use a nickel or other coin in adjusting the calibration of your scale, it should be the most pristine coin you can find.

Weed Scale Terminology
Accuracy VS. Precision
Accuracy
Accuracy is the degree to which a measurement relates to its true value. This is commonly defined as +/- (number) (% or weight unit).
For example, let’s put a 10-gram calibration weight on the popular AWS pocket scale. Say the display reads 100.01. That means the accuracy of the balance is 0.01 grams or one centigram; it has an accuracy of +/-0.1% or +/-0.1 grams.
Remember that accuracy is dependent on how well your scale is calibrated. A high-quality calibrated digital scale for weed should be within +/- one unit of its lowest display resolution.
All measuring devices have their limits. Other factors that affect an accurate weight reading include:
- repeatability
- temperature
- readability
- uncertainty of measurement
Precision – Repeatability
Precision is not a synonym for accuracy—in fact, it’s completely different! A scale may be very accurate but not at all precise at the same time.
How?
Precision, aka repeatability, refers to the degree to which a scale gives identical measurements when weighing a known object under the same conditions. It is how much your scale varies when weighing the same thing again and again.
You can test this yourself by weighing an object repeatedly. First, calibrate your scale. Then record each weight total and figure out the deviation between measurements. There’s your level of precision. Add these numbers altogether, and the mean sum will give you a rating to compare.
Let’s do a precision vs. repeatability test by weighing a pound of weed on two digital decigram scales, ten times each. We have Scale A and Scale B.
Ideally, the scales should read 453.59 grams for a pound:
Scale A | Scale B |
453.59 (4x) | 453.59 (2x) |
453.63 (4x) | 453.58 (3x) |
453.55 (2x) | 453.60 (3x) |
453.61 (2x) |
Scale A reads 453.59 grams four times, 453.63 grams four times, and 453.55 grams two times.
Scale B reads 453.59 grams two times, 453.58 grams three times, 453.60 grams three times, and 453.61 grams one time.
Results:
Scale A is more precise but less accurate. Despite the weight values being further from the test weight, its repeated measurements agreed with their mean more. Simply put, the results are closer to each other.
Scale B is more accurate but less precise. While the weight values are closer to the test weight, its repeated measurements agreed with their mean less; the results are further from each other.
Readability
Readability is the smallest increments that a scale can display.
For instance, if we take a large table scale with a readability of 0.002lb (~1 gram), the weight value displayed will never be a 3.5 or 0.1 amount, but only whole gram .0 increments. Although the scale may be accurate at reading these fractions of a gram, the LED number will only trip over/under when it hits a full point zero weight amount.
- 1 gram (0.0002 lb) readability will display in whole gram increments.
- 0.5 gram (0.0001 lb) readability will display in half-gram increments.
- 0.1 gram readability will display in decigram increments
- 0.01 gram readability will display in centigram increments.
- 0.001 gram readability will display in milligram increments.
Readability is also known as scale division, scale interval, digit, d, and resolution.
Example:
453.592 g (1 pound) is weighed on a 0.001 g readability scale.
The weight will read as 453.592 g
453.592 g (1 pound) is weighed on a 0.1 g readability scale.
The weight will read as 453.6 g
Maximum Capacity
Maximum Capacity is the maximum weight a scale can measure. Also called max rated capacity.
There are many good scales for weed with both high and low maximum capacities. Generally speaking, the higher a scale’s maximum capacity is, the lower its readability will be.
- The AWS pocket scale has a high 1000 gram (2.2 pounds) maximum capacity, although it has only a 0.1 gram (whole gram) readability.
- The AWS GEMINI has a low 20 gram maximum capacity but a high 0.001 gram (milligram) readability.
Divisions
Divisions are the total amount of possible increments a scale can equate to.
Figure out your weed scale’s divisions by dividing its capacity with its readability (capacity – readability = divisions).
For example:
A. The AWS pocket scale has a 1,000 gram capacity and a 0.1 gram readability. 1,000 ÷ 0.1 = 10,000. This scale has 10,000 divisions.
B. The Ozero Pronto large scale has a 5,100 gram capacity and a 1 gram readability. 5,100 ÷ 1 = 5,1000. This scale has 5,100 divisions.
Why is my weed scale reading inaccurately? Errors, help!
Several factors can account for inaccuracy or error (E) in a digital scale’s reading. The accuracy and precision of a weed scale may vary with the environment it’s exposed to or stored in. Properly stored, a good scale will last over a decade. Problematic factors include:
- Dust – Dust accumulating on the scale’s platform or building up inside the casing is detrimental to longevity. Keep the scale clean—you can clear out the cracks and crevices with compressed air dusters.
- Temperature – Most digital scales for weed will work within in a temperature range between 32°F (0°C) and 104°F (40°C). Scales should be stored at a room temperature of 50°F (10°C) to 86°F (30°C). They should never be directly exposed to the sun’s heat and UV rays.
- Humidity – Humidity can build up in electronics and cause them to fail. Anybody who has lived in Hawaii can attest to this. Try to keep your scale in the driest place you got if you live in a humid location.
- Air Currents or Draft – One of the most common reasons for an inaccurate weight reading. Air currents or drafts adversely affect sensitive digital scales. To obtain high precision milligram readings, the scale should be protected with draft shields in a closed environment.
- Air Buoyancy – Objects with a low density may be affected by air buoyancy. Displaced air by our bodies and other organisms creates an upward force caused by atmospheric pressure. Reference: https://www.nist.gov/document-13101
- Gravity – Gravity should really have no difference in weighing if you adjust your scale’s calibration at the same place you are using it. There are slight gravitational variations in altitude and latitude that can alter the most sensitive measurements. Read more about gravity and altitude.
If your weed scale is giving you too many problems, just buy a new one. Cheap weed scales are a dime-a-dozen.
How much does weed really weigh?
Don’t measure short! Decigrams (0.1 gram) and centigrams (0.01 gram) often get forgotten in the measurement of weed. One ounce is 28.35 grams to the centigram.
Most dealers give out exact twenty-eight point zero gram ounces. By cutting down the 28.35 gram ounce to just 28.00, a remainder of 5.59 grams is leftover per pound. This is understood as the dealer’s bonus.
Here’s the math:
16 x 28.00 grams = 448 grams. One pound = 453.592 gramsThat means sixteen 28.00 gram ounces add up to 448.00 grams, over 5 ½ grams short of a true pound (453.592 grams).
Cannabis Weight References:
- How much does a kilo weigh on a scale? A kilo weighs 1000 grams or 32.274 ounces.
- How much does a pound weigh on a scale? A pound weighs 454 grams or 16 ounces. However, 448 grams is frequently used by dealers.
- How much does a half-pound weigh on a scale? A half-pound weighs 227 grams or 8 ounces. 224 grams is the standard half-pound package.
- How much does a quarter-pound weigh on a scale? A quarter weighs 113.4 grams or 4 ounces. 112 grams is more common.
- How much does an ounce weigh on a scale? An ounce weighs 28.35 grams, although 28.0 grams is the norm for cannabis.
- How much does a half-ounce weigh on a scale? A half-ounce weighs 14.1748 grams, usually rounded down to 14 grams.
- How much does a quarter ounce weigh on a scale? A quarter ounce weighs 7.087 grams, pretty close to straight 7 grams.
- How much does an eighth weigh on a scale? An eighth weighs 3.544 grams, mostly being given as 3.5 gram bags.
- How much does a dub sack (twenty sack) weigh on a scale? Depending on where you are, a dub sack or twenty sack could mean 2 grams of bud. The terms are not based on weight but rather cost, making the true weight up to the dealer’s discretion.
- How much does a gram weigh on a scale? A gram will read out 1.0 grams on a scale, or 1000 milligrams.
Heavy bags
Among friends in the cannabis community, it’s common to add a bit more weight to the bag as a perk, aka hooking it up.
Hooking it up explained:
Let’s say that Ben wants 3 ½ grams (an eighth) of bud from Cheap Charlie. Cheap Charlie gives Ben more than 3 ½ grams of weight in bud—3.6 grams. Cheap Charlie hooked it up. Ben gets more bud than he expected and is stoked about it. It’s a good experience for sure.
The additional weight perk can be just a small amount. A real Cheap Charlie will enjoy the benefits of hooking it up while only adding an extra tenth of a gram per eighth. So the bare minimum would be:
- an eighth is 3.6 grams
- a quarter is 7.2 grams
- a half is 14.4 gram
- and an ounce is 28.8 grams
For not even a full gram per ounce, Cheap Charlie can hook it up. Of course, the more extra weight, the merrier. That’s called hooking it up fat—all easy to do with a digital gram scale.
The weight of weed changes
Cannabis buds precisely weighed out to fractions of a gram may alter in weight naturally when exposed to changes in the environment.
Cannabis is organic matter that reacts to air. If you’re always popping off jar lids to get a whiff of the dank, then you’ve likely seen this first hand.
Humidity levels vary everywhere, and with the humidity variation, so will the weight of cannabis buds unless they are sealed airtight and not opened—see stash jars and containers.
Weed weight scam
One shady trick that certain dealers do is misting water on dried buds, thereby making them weigh more. At any rate, the moisture may lead to dangerous mold problems.
Botrytis cinerea, aka gray mold or bud rot, is a common fungal disease that grows on marijuana in humid conditions.
A type of hypersensitivity pneumonitis known as Winegrower’s lung is caused by contact with Botrytis mold. So please avoid this practice for everyone’s safety.

When buying a weed scale for sale online:
Be sure to consider the following when selecting the right weed scale for your needs:
Specifications
The specifications of a digital scale should match your intended usage.
High Capacity
A large platform scale with a high maximum capacity and relatively low readability is appropriate for cannabis growers and dealers weighing large amounts of weed, generally over a pound.
High Accuracy
A portable or pocket-size scale with a low maximum capacity and high readability is ideal for cannabis growers and dealers weighing weed in divisions of a pound.
Design Quality
Most cheap digital scales are made from sturdy ABS plastic casing and feature a stainless steel platform. As you cannot hold the product physically when shopping online, it’s advised to scan the product reviews before you buy. Also, take into account the seller of the item.
One thing you’ll notice when buying a digital scale online is many sellers are selling similar-looking models. This is because the scales are sold white-label to distributors. In this instance, it’s recommended to purchase with the most reputable seller.
Size and Appearance
The size and appearance of a digital scale are a large factor in its marketability. Scales have evolved from simple instruments to highly functional computers that come in a range of interesting designs.
You will want to buy a weed scale that fits your weighing needs, whether that’s a large scale for big crops or a pocket scale for dealing.
Price
Price is a major consideration when shopping for the best weed scales online. Thankfully, quality modern digital scales can be purchased on a small budget—hundreds of positive reviews verify the best ones.
All of the weed scales reviewed here, except for the pro kitchen model, are priced super cheap. You should be able to find a good scale in the price range of ten to twenty-five dollars.
Handheld Postal Scale
If you’re a true stoner, you’ll know what the contraption below is:
These little hand scales, known as postal scales, work better than you might think. They are handy for weighing out ounces on the fly.
A good rule of thumb to use when weighing weed with postal scales is to hit a third over your measurement mark—⅓ past the tick. Nobody wants to get shorted on a bag.
Forget the batteries and hassle of a digital scale. This is the true “pocket scale”.
